What's on the worksheet

  1. Look at how to write I and i. Start at the green dot.
  2. Trace the uppercase I.
  3. Trace the lowercase i.
  4. Write I and i on your own.
  5. Trace the word. Color the picture.

Skills practiced

This sheet is built around the short i sound heard at the start of igloo, insect, and itch. Your child traces uppercase I, a straight line with a short line across the top and bottom, and lowercase i, a short line with a dot above it. Both forms use only straight strokes, which makes I a friendly letter for little hands. The last row asks your child to trace igloo next to a picture to color.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Say the letter name and its sound together, then point to the green dot where each stroke starts.
  2. Trace the big model with a finger first, following the numbered arrows in order.
  3. Your child traces the gray letters with a pencil, starting each one at the green dot, then writes the letter alone on the empty line.
  4. Finish with the picture word: say it slowly, trace it, and color the picture.

Tips for parents and teachers

Remind your child that the dot on lowercase i goes on last, after the line is finished. Some children make the dot huge or press so hard the paper tears, so show a small, gentle tap instead. Short i can sound like short e, so say igloo and egg side by side and let your child hear the difference.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Trace just the straight line of each letter first and add the top, bottom, and dot later. A wet finger on a chalkboard is a good warm-up before the pencil.

Harder: Ask your child to listen for the short i in the middle of words like pig, fish, and six. Then have them write uppercase and lowercase i on the blank row.
