What's on the worksheet

  1. Look at how to write E and e. Start at the green dot.
  2. Trace the uppercase E.
  3. Trace the lowercase e.
  4. Write E and e on your own.
  5. Trace the word. Color the picture.

Skills practiced

This page pairs the letter E with the short e sound at the start of egg, elephant, and elbow. Uppercase E uses four straight strokes: one line down and three lines across. Lowercase e is quite different, a short line across the middle that curves up and around like a c. Your child traces both forms, writes them without dots, and then traces the word egg beside a picture to color.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Say the letter name and its sound together, then point to the green dot where each stroke starts.
  2. Trace the big model with a finger first, following the numbered arrows in order.
  3. Your child traces the gray letters with a pencil, starting each one at the green dot, then writes the letter alone on the empty line.
  4. Finish with the picture word: say it slowly, trace it, and color the picture.

Tips for parents and teachers

For uppercase E, make the long line down first and then add the three arms from top to bottom. Children often add extra arms, so count them together: one, two, three. Lowercase e starts in the middle, not at the top, and that is the step most kids miss on the first try.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Do only the uppercase rows, since straight lines are easier than the curve in lowercase e. You can also print the page a little larger so the letters are bigger.

Harder: Have your child say egg, elephant, and envelope and listen for the same first sound. Then ask for a silly sentence with two short e words, like 'Ed has ten eggs.'
