What's on the worksheet

  1. Trace each number. Color that many boxes.

Skills practiced

This page gives each number from 1 to 10 its own row. Your child copies the dark model, traces the dotted copies from the green starting dot, and then colors that many boxes in a ten frame. Writing the numeral and showing the amount side by side helps a four-year-old connect the shape 6 with six real things. That link between symbol and quantity is the base for counting and adding in kindergarten.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Look at the numbers at the top together and trace each one in the air, starting at the green dot and following the arrows.
  2. Your child traces the gray numbers on each row from left to right.
  3. Say the number out loud and color that many boxes in the ten frame, touching each box as you count.
  4. Check the boxes together: a full row of the frame is 5 and a full frame is 10.

Tips for parents and teachers

Trace the first number of each row with a finger before picking up the pencil. Say the number out loud while tracing, then count the boxes as they get colored. Reversed digits, especially 3, 7, and 9, are very common at this age, so point back to the green dot and the arrow at the top instead of erasing a lot.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Do one or two rows a day instead of the whole page. Let your child trace with a crayon or a highlighter, which slides more easily than a pencil and is easier to see.

Harder: Fold the page so only the models show and ask your child to write each number from memory. Then call out a number and have them color a matching ten frame on scrap paper.
