What's on the worksheet

  1. Connect the dots in order, from 1 to 20, then back to 1.
  2. Color the picture.

Skills practiced

Connecting the dots from 1 to 20 asks your child to say the counting sequence in order and to recognize each written number, including the teen numbers 11 to 19 that are often mixed up. A winter surprise appears when the last dot connects back to the first, and then your child colors it. Kindergartners count to 100 and read numbers to 20, and a dot to dot turns that practice into a small mystery. Drawing straight lines between dots also builds pencil control.

Common Core K.CC.A.1: Reciting numbers aloud to 100, plus skip counting in steps of ten

Common Core K.CC.A.3: Writing numerals up to 20 and matching them to small groups

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Your child finds the dot with the first number and puts the pencil on it.
  2. Find the next number and draw a line to it, without skipping any.
  3. Keep going to the last dot, then join it to the first one if the picture needs it.
  4. Color the hidden picture that appears.

Tips for parents and teachers

Ask your child to say each number out loud before drawing to it. When the lines reach the teens, slow down: 12 and 21, or 13 and 31, are easy to confuse, and only 1 to 20 are on this page. If your child skips a number, the picture will look odd, which is a great built-in check. Using a ruler is not needed; wobbly lines are fine.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Connect the dots from 1 to 10 together, then let your child finish from 11 to 20. Point to each next number if your child gets lost.

Harder: Ask your child to guess the picture before connecting, or to count backward from 20 to 1 while tracing over the finished lines.
