What's on the worksheet

  1. Say the name of each picture. Color the pictures that begin with /m/ red and the ones that begin with /t/ blue.
  2. Write the letter, uppercase and lowercase. Trace the gray letters first.
  3. Draw something that begins with /m/. ★

Skills practiced

Your child says the name of each picture, listens for the first sound, and colors the pictures that start with /m/ in one color and /t/ in another. Hearing the first sound in a spoken word is a key step toward reading and spelling, because it connects sounds to letters. Next, your child writes uppercase and lowercase M and T and draws one more picture that begins with /m/. Having two sounds on one page keeps your child listening carefully instead of coloring everything.

Common Core RF.K.2.d: Picking out the first, middle, and last sounds in words like cat

Common Core RF.K.3.a: Matching each consonant letter with the sound it usually makes

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Say the name of each picture together, slowly.
  2. Stretch the first sound of the word (bbbball) so it is easy to hear.
  3. Your child colors only the pictures that start with the target sound.
  4. Say the sound, not the letter name: /b/, not bee.

Tips for parents and teachers

Say each picture name slowly and stretch the first sound: mmmoon, t-t-tooth. The letter name is not the sound, so model /m/ as a hum and /t/ as a short tap, not em or tee. Some pictures could have two names, such as mitten or glove; agree on the name in the answer key before you start. If your child colors a picture that starts with another sound, say the two words side by side and listen again.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Work with one sound only: color the /m/ pictures today and come back to /t/ another day. Say each picture name together before coloring.

Harder: Ask your child to find three things at home that start with /m/ or /t/, or to listen for the pictures that end with the /t/ sound.
