What's on the worksheet

  1. Count the pictures. Write how many in all.
  2. Draw 3 apples and 4 more. Write how many in all. ★

Skills practiced

Each row shows two groups of the same picture with a plus sign between them. Your child counts all the pictures and writes the total, so the equation at the end of the row stops being abstract: 3 + 4 really means three things and four more. At the bottom, your child draws a small addition story and solves it. Kindergartners are expected to show addition with objects and drawings and to solve sums within 10, and linking the picture to the equation is exactly that skill.

Common Core K.OA.A.1: Showing adding and taking away with fingers, objects, and drawings

Common Core K.OA.A.2: Solving simple story problems that add or take away, up to 10

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Your child counts each group of pictures, touching each one only once.
  2. For addition, count both groups together to find how many in all.
  3. For subtraction, the pictures with an X are taken away, so count only the ones without an X.
  4. Write the answer in the box and read the whole number sentence out loud.

Tips for parents and teachers

Ask your child to count the first group, then keep counting into the second group instead of starting again at 1. That is counting on, and it is faster. If an answer is off by one, the usual cause is skipping a picture or counting one twice; lightly crossing off each picture while counting fixes both. Read each finished equation aloud together: three plus four equals seven.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Put real objects on top of the pictures and slide them together into one pile before counting. Work through the first three rows only.

Harder: Cover the pictures and ask your child to solve each equation from the numbers alone, then check by uncovering. Try writing each turnaround fact, like 4 + 3.
