What's on the worksheet

  1. Write the time on the digital clock.
  2. Look at clock 2. Write the time one hour later.
  3. Draw your bedtime on a clock on the back of the page. ★

Skills practiced

Every clock on this page shows a time on the hour, so your child can focus on one idea: the long hand points straight up to the 12, and the short hand tells which hour it is. Your child writes each time on a digital clock, such as 4:00, and then works out the time one hour later. First graders learn to tell time to the hour before half hours, and linking the analog face to the digital form now makes both easier to read in everyday life.

Common Core 1.MD.B.3: Reading clocks to the hour and half hour

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Show the difference between the short hand (hours) and the long hand (minutes).
  2. Read the first clock together and look at how the same time is written on the digital clock.
  3. Your child writes each time on the digital clock, or draws the hands to match it.
  4. Check on a real clock at home, and say the time both ways: 3:30 and half past 3.

Tips for parents and teachers

Teach your child to check the long hand first: if it points to the 12, the time is something o'clock. Then read the short hand. The usual mix-up is reading the long hand as the hour, so 12:00 gets written for every clock; pointing to each hand and naming it (hour hand, minute hand) clears this up. Ask about real times during the day too: it is 6 o'clock, time for dinner.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Use a toy clock or draw a big clock face together, and have your child set each time before writing it. Read the clocks aloud first.

Harder: Ask what time it was one hour earlier for each clock, or have your child show three o'clock times from their own day on a paper clock.
