What's on the worksheet

  1. Write the time on the digital clock.
  2. Look at clock 2. Write the time one hour later.
  3. Draw your bedtime on a clock on the back of the page. ★

Skills practiced

Your child reads six analog clocks, some on the hour and some at half past, and writes each time on the digital clock next to it. Then comes a quick step forward in time: what will the clock say one hour later? First graders are expected to tell and write time to the hour and half hour on both kinds of clocks. The key idea on this page is that at half past, the long hand points to the 6 and the short hand sits halfway between two numbers, not right on one of them.

Common Core 1.MD.B.3: Reading clocks to the hour and half hour

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Show the difference between the short hand (hours) and the long hand (minutes).
  2. Read the first clock together and look at how the same time is written on the digital clock.
  3. Your child writes each time on the digital clock, or draws the hands to match it.
  4. Check on a real clock at home, and say the time both ways: 3:30 and half past 3.

Tips for parents and teachers

Look at the short hand first and say the hour out loud, then look at the long hand. The most common mistake at half past is reading the wrong hour: at 7:30 the short hand sits between the 7 and the 8, and many children write 8:30. Remind your child that the hour is the number the short hand has already passed. A real analog clock in the room makes all of this much easier.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Do the o'clock times first and save the half past clocks for a second session. Move the hands on a real or paper clock to show each time before writing it.

Harder: Ask your child to say what time it was 30 minutes before each clock, or to write each time in words, such as half past four.
