What's on the worksheet

  1. Solve the problem in each square. Color by the code.
  2. Solve. Write the answer.
  3. Write a subtraction problem that equals 4. ★

Skills practiced

Each square holds a subtraction fact within 20 that crosses ten, such as 13 − 5 or 16 − 9. Your child solves it, finds the difference in the color code, and colors the square, and a red mushroom slowly appears. These are the facts first graders find hardest, so the picture gives a reason to keep going and a quick way to spot a wrong answer. Below the grid are three more facts and one open question: write a subtraction that equals a given number.

Common Core 1.OA.C.6: Adding and subtracting up to 20, with quick recall of facts to 10

Common Core 1.OA.B.4: Thinking of subtraction as finding the missing part of an addition

Short descriptions in our own words. About our standards.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Read the color key at the top together: which color goes with each number or letter.
  2. Your child solves the problem, counts the dots, or reads the letter in each square and colors it the matching color.
  3. Squares marked leave white stay white.
  4. The picture that appears shows right away if the work is correct.

Tips for parents and teachers

Show your child one strategy and stick with it, such as going back to 10 first: for 13 − 5, take 3 to get to 10, then 2 more to get to 8. Thinking addition also works: 5 plus what makes 13? If a square turns out the wrong color, solve that fact together with a number line or counters; the mistake is usually off by one, from counting the starting number.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Write a number line from 0 to 20 at the top of the page, and let your child solve one row a day instead of the whole grid.

Harder: Time the second half of the grid, or ask your child to write the matching addition fact for each color in the code, like 8 + 5 = 13.
