What's on the worksheet
- Count and write how many.
- Color as many pictures as the number shows.
- Circle the group with more.
Skills practiced
Pre-K is the year children connect three ideas: the counting words, the objects being counted, and the written numeral. This penguin page works on all three. Your child counts groups of up to ten and writes the total, then reads a numeral and colors exactly that many pictures, which is harder because they have to stop at the right number. The last task compares two groups of penguins, building the more-and-fewer language kindergarten math relies on.

How to use it, step by step
- Count the pictures in the first row together, touching each one only once.
- Your child writes the number in the box or, if not writing yet, draws that many tally marks.
- For the numeral task, color exactly as many pictures as the number shows.
- Finish by comparing the two groups and circling the one with more.
Tips for parents and teachers
Ask your child to stop and say the number out loud before writing it. In the coloring task many children color every picture in the row; point to the numeral first and count while coloring so they know when to stop. Reversed digits, especially 3 and 7, are normal at this age, so praise the correct count first.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Count the rows together and let your child write the numbers with a highlighter you traced lightly first. Use five real crackers to act out the comparing task.
Harder: Cover the groups with a sticky note after counting and ask how many there were. Then ask how many more penguins the bigger group has than the smaller one.
